The laser printer fuser assembly is the heating roller unit that melts and fuses the toner onto the paper. The fuser assembly is made up of a heating roller and a pressure roller. The heating roller applies the heat to the toner on the printed page and the pressure roller presses and fuses the toner into the printed page.
Fuser Errors fuser assembly is one of the most common laser printer parts to fail. Typically, over time paper dust and toner dust accumulates on the fuser thermostats and causes contact and abrasion of the heating roller. Fuser scratches and scoring shows up as a light vertical streak down the page. Another reason for fuser failure is the the quartz bulb the heats the fuser sleeve burns out. Your laser printer may display an Error 50 Service Code, which indicates that there is a problem with the fuser assembly. After turning off the laser printer and letting the fuser unit cool down, you can visually inspect the fuser rollers for scratches and scoring. If the quartz lamp is burned out the toner will not fuse to the paper and there is no heat radiating from the fuser assembly. Infrequently the lower voltage power supply to the fuser is the source of the error and may need to be replaced. This is more common with HP 8100 laser printers. Periodically the fuser, in feed rollers, and transfer rollers need to be replaced as part of normal laser printer maintenance at about 150,000 copies. The HP maintenance kit includes the fuser unit and parts for scheduled laser printer maintenance.
